Connect By Distance is a Web site that asks for your stories about the power of online community to change and influence each of our lives. As such, it’s important that we agree on ground rules or guidelines for your participation.
- Use your good judgment.
- Be responsible. Don’t post commercial advertisements or spam.
- Be civil. Disagreement is fine, but personal attacks are not.
- Be respectful. Connected by Distance members represent many different races, ethnicities, religions and nationalities.
- Show empathy. Sharing stories can be an emotional, difficult process. Don’t forget that when you read and respond to each story.
- Be helpful. We all need a little help sometimes.
- Have fun.
We reserve the right to remove or not post, any submission, post, or comment. We also reserve the right to remove/ban any member at our discretion. Usually, this will involve a notification and/or warning before action is taken.
In the terms listed below, “we” refers to the administrators of this Web site; “you” refers to the user of theConnected by Distance site and “CBD” refers to the web site at: http://connectedbydistance.com.
Terms of Service:
As stated previously, CBD is a site that asks for your participation. As such, it is important that you understand the agreement that is accepted as a term of your participation here.
Non-Exclusive Rights: Agreement between user and site owner
We grant you non-exclusive rights to the information you post on CBD. Basically this means that anything you post on CBD remains available to you to reuse in any way you wish.
Privacy: Protecting personal information
As a condition of membership/participation of CBD, we require a valid email address which is not publicly viewable on the site. We agree not to disclose, share or sell your email address or any other personally identifying information without your permission. We may contact you occasionally regarding the Web site.
Creative Commons: Agreement between CBD users/owners and the rest of the world
CBD operates under a license called a Creative Commons license. It works much like a copyright, but is less restrictive when it comes to allowing others to reuse, remix, quote, display, etc. the contents of the CBD site, provided that they provide attribution to the author’s work and the work is not used for commercial purposes. Any contributions you make to CBD are governed by this license.

Project participants and visitors to this Web site agree to grant a non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free license to the rest of the world for their submissions to ConnectedByDistance.com under the Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 3.0 License.
The CBD project goal is to eventually turn a selection of the stories collected at connectedbydistance.com into a physical book. Further, the CBD administrators may create other offshoot projects using your content, according to the terms of the Creative Commons license. If you have concerns with this, please DO NOT submit your content to the CBD Web site.
Photo Submissions: You need to own the photo or have rights to it
If you decide to include a photo with your story submission, you agree that you have the right to use the photo. The best case scenario is that you own the photo. You may be asked to prove that you have the right to use the photo before the photo can/will be published.
Accuracy of Information: Agreement on how the information should be used.
As the site owners, we do not provide any assurance of the accuracy or reliability of the information posted in CBD. All information, opinions or perspectives shared on CBD by the user and/or owners are to be used at the users discretion and do not necessarily reflect the views of the site owners.
Your Choice: Participation is optional
CBD does not require that you register as a member in order to read all content and/or post comments to entries. If you are concerned about privacy for anything in these terms, you can utilize the vast majority of CBD functionality as an anonymous user. Personal information is only required if you wish to submit a story.
